Popplet
Put A Smile On
Inspired by: Nick Cave
This project was a great self booster but also a bit of a poor turnout. My puppet was to resemble me, though I don't think I look that stubby in person. I chose to celebrate my optimistic attitude. I did this through using warm colors such as, yellow, red, and orange. I had myself wearing a hat in the shape of a sun, so I used yellow to give the bright sun appearance. I use red, orange and yellow wires twisted together to make the rays. To add to the noise element and to create a jubilant atmosphere of my puppet, I combined bright colored beads together on each ray. I used sequins as eyes to keep with the jubilant and fun atmosphere. I created a cloak going around me made of cool pastels to contrast all of the warm colors, but to still stay in tact with the happy atmosphere. I would use this at the end of my school year to have students celebrate who they have become throughout the year and to work as a closing project. It is a great way to get students thinking about the positive things within themselves and analyzing how to portray those qualities through more than just a smile on a face, but through an entire story.
Grateful
Inspired by: Norman Rockwell
I unfortunately missed this day's studio, but it was one that I truly enjoyed doing. I love getting to use anything from my trip to Ghana. I named my magazine by combining my first and last name. I chose to make my magazine issue focus on gratefulness. Through my whole trip in Ghana, I was faced with a sea of Ghanaians who were so loving and so grateful for all that they had. Children would be playing with a grocery bag filled with newspaper as a soccer ball but they not once complained. Everyone I encountered was happy and better yet, they were happy with what they had. I wanted to portray this message through the idea that it is easy to be greedy and forget all that you have. I am in no means perfect when it comes to this, but it is something I value and message I want more people think about before thinking they need all of the materialistic things around them. I want to celebrate the Ghanaians joyfulness and gratefulness and start having people think about the things around them. I would definitely use this in my classroom for students to think of an issue going on in the world and how they can address this issue in a positive spin. This project would be used in a similar sense as the Rivera and Benton project by addressing an issue students are passionate about, but would be executed differently. Students see magazines all the time, so it would be a fun way for students to address an issue by creating their own magazine issue/cover.
Gammy
Inspired by: Miriam Schapiro
Gammy. One of the most inspirational people in my life. My Gammy is the one that ultimately made me decide to become a teacher. I hope to be a selfless and caring as she is one day. I was able to print off a picture of Gammy's high school picture photo for her face. I used a variety of fabrics for her clothing because she always makes use of what she has and is in no means a greedy person. She does things herself, but also for those around her. I chose flowery and soft fabrics to celebrate her happy and easy going character. I would love to use this in my classroom to see how other students might celebrate someone important in their life. Students can see a variety of ways to execute this task and recollect on how this person has influence them.
I am including a passage celebrating my grandmother that I recently wrote:
Dear Gammy,
Thank you. Thank you for being my role model. I want to be a teacher because you've inspired me. I look forward to making the chicken wire cornucopia for my Thanksgiving bulletin board. I remember every detail, even if you don't. I have the motivation to be as good of a cook because waking up to hot pancakes every morning is one of my favorite memories/ I remember every detail, even if you don't. I want to be as loving and funny of a wife as you, plaving a blow up life-size doll next to your husband to see how he'd react in the morning (terrified), priceless. I remember every detail, even if you don't.
Love you a bushel and a peck,
Shelby
